Rotary Downs Last show of 2009

Friday, December 18th | 10pm door | 11pm show | BOGO drinks ‘til midnight | $5 cover | 18+
Republic, 828 S. Peters...

Well this is it. Rotary Downs' last show of 2009. It has been an amazing year, as they keep getting better. We started this year off w/ a gig in Cannes France. Then in Feb played the 7th annual Not So Super Super Hero Party, and followed that up in March with multiple gigs and showcases at SXSW in Austin. Come April we played our 3rd Jazz Fest in a row, and later that month ended up winning Gambit Weekly's "Best Rock Band" for the 2nd year in a row beating out some amazing other musicians.

2009 brought the recording process into a finer light, and a light that could shine hope on the end of the road for the new album. What had been a struggling 3 year process, now sees 2010 as a new year for a new record. We have tentatively set the national release date for February, and this just announced here - will play our CD Release Party for the album on March 5th at One Eyed Jacks in New Orleans. Stay tuned for more details

But for this last show on December 18th...join us for some fun, some classic RD tunes, and some surprise covers.

Don’t miss the highly anticipated ‘A Christmas Story’ Throwback featuring Rotary Downs, a cheesy Christmas sweater contest, professional pictures with Santa, and buy-one-get-one-free drinks until midnight! Rotary Downs and their special Christmas choir will perform originals and 80s/90s covers while dressed in cheesy Christmas sweaters, and the 80’s holiday classic ‘A Christmas Story’ will play on the big screen all night. Yule definitely want to wear some type of holiday attire. Everyone in a cheesy Christmas sweater will get a free drink ticket at the door, and the best sweater as judged by the audience will win a Throwback slap bracelet, sweatband, and $30 bar tab plus a Rotary Downs CD, DVD, and T-shirt! We’ll also have a professional photographer to take your picture with Santa, Mrs. Clause, and an elf in a winter wonderland! Plus, come early to get buy-one-get-one-free domestic beers and well drinks until midnight! Everyone can also get $2 “Eggnog” shots ($1 with a Throwback Slap Bracelet) at the bar by the door. As always, enjoy $2 High Life and $4 wells, solve a Rubik’s Cube for a free tab, and play the Throwback arcade with 40 retro games all night! Be one of the best-dressed, and we'll also take your Polaroid and put it on the Throwback Wall of Fame. You'll get a $20 bar tab for each Throwback that your picture stays up!

Mixing it Up

Right about now, the two J's are at our boy Ivan Klisanin's home in Lafayette, mixing/tweaking/patching/poking songs for the next Rotary Downs record. If you dont' remember Ivan, he was the savior of "Chained to the Chariot", producing, recording, and doing final mixes on most of the tapes we had after we scurried West from Hurricane Katrina.

We are happy to be back there, allowing Ivan to see 'how far we've come'. baby.

Maple Leaf This Friday

Rotary Downs will again return to the far most reaches of Western Orleans Parish, where, they will embark on a two set journey into the realms of the well known Worlds of Funk - The Maple Leaf.

And were just one month earlier, echo's of "why dont you play something funky!..why aren't you playing something funky!" coming from the mouth of the head chef at Jaquimo's - were met w/ his friends retort: "Jack, they dont DO that kind of music!"

...yes, and they've allowed us to play again. And we can't wait.

sxsw rapupp

3 gigs in 24hrs. All 3 shows were great, good crowds and good music. our sets were around 45min long each, and setlists went like this:

Cul De Sac
Montre Vous
Vampires/Werewolves
Through the Undertow->
Promised Land
Random Digs
False Protection
Djinni Stomp

Mostly new songs that were well received by the rabid cell phone tapping crowds. we just hope they were texting their pals saying good shit about Tiffany's hot-high waist pants, or Mike G's indian dance. And mostly very shitty stage sound...cause, who cares?

Our first gig was the Paste Magazine party. we played @ Ace's Lounge on 6th. the venue was wicked. think: strip club format. and it actually was a burlesque club - the stage was raised behind the bar.

Stage Sound: 4.5 (out of 10)

All our good SF peeps were there, plus our NO peeps. thanks for supporting. it was a lighting round of songs, and minimum stage banter. We left the show quick - i hooked uup w/ mr james bailey (of Babies Makin Babies fame) and my buddy chaz and went drinkin. we were successful. We caught a wicked Preistess show that killed.

At noon Thursday, i sat in on percussion with White Bitch. that was a blast. i was tempted to begin drinking all that cold Lonestar that Jason clark of NOLA Soul set out, but didnt. i opted for the Sugar Free Vitamin Water. and i was rewarded.

Next gig was the Electronic Musician/Reapandsow day party at Calle Habana 6. Stage sound: 3.4. sucked, but the show was good n tight like a Batter Blaster Waffle. we rolled right out and headed for the RD slot at NOLA Soul.

Mynameisjohnmichael were currently killing it on stage as we arrived...they sounded great. there were some sound issues as NOLA Souls' sound contact called on Monday saying that the soundguy "fell through" - ouch. but J came thru and saved the day w/ a Frankenstein system run by our NOLA man Mark. great job. we mixed up the tunes on this set and switched out djinni for B/W closer, and left wanting more. But all we could give them was high fives, beers and sweaty admiration for their undying love.

AFter that, we were all hungry, and Mike's uncle Tim brought us to Sams BBQ on 12th St.. HOly shit. it was amazing...and some of the coolest wall photos and art on the wall. Please go there and sit inside to soak it all in..and some of the nicest folks who weighed our ribs and sausage this side of I-35.

I soon hit the wall face first and had to retreat...to our oasis in NW Austin: The Girardot House. Dan and Ann Girardot hooked us up at their house out here, with sleeps, showers, breakfast and coffee....i don't see how we would have made it w/o the proper rest and relax we got here. Many thanks.

now enjoy these not so rock n roll shots...more on their way...

MIDEM Updates

http://midem.com/App/homepage.cfm?appname=100508&moduleid=411&campaignid=11657&iUserCampaignID=46321358

go to SHOWS...and find some live Rotary Downs on the official MIDEM website.

Chris, J Clark and i are just getting off our full day of airplanes and decompression to finally be back to our respective homes. it feels good. I wouldn't suggest flying to France w/ your buddies to only stay for 2.5 days. And most of those days were spent loading in, travelling in shuttles, or schlepping gear. But it was a unique experience to network with some of the most innovative music business folks in the world. Picture the Convention Center with 3 levels of booths housing companies from every country, sending their distribution, labels, pressing, booking, DVD manufacturing companies to one place.

Buzz bands, buzz words, hi-heels, guitar-hero, networking bizness cards interchanging hands, and ear protection...this was MIDEM,...all day. And RD got to play an evening showcase. IT was a blast.

Just don't eat the chicken on Air France..

Rotary Downs in France....

18/1/09

Hello everyone..reporting 6 hrs ahead right now. - we left the US at 3ish on Sat. and arrived at our hotel at 3p on Sunday (actually 9am US) in Cannes after 3 planes, 3 airports, and a few transports...it's pretty overwhelming here...the worlds largest music industry conference and on the beautiful French Riviera no less.

After checking in and getting that done, we walked around a bit, and ate some pretty bad food in the tourist district of Cannes. My Bolognese Spaghetti was a pound of pasta w/ a 1/2 a cup of ground beef and oil. and damn we paid for it. Looks like we'll have to shell out the big bucks in Cannes for some authentic eats. I guess my taste buds have aquired that Gas Station Po-Boy mentality living in New Orleans. You can really go anywhere and get great food.

19/1/09

went to sleep at about 7:30 pm last night - was beat down. woke up at 7am on today and walked out my back garden deck to an open sunrise on the Mediterranean. Can't beat....more to come
